This video just narrates my woes for the past 8 months. Thank you for the epiphany! I’m on the road to upping my ferritin (a laughably sad and alarming 3), iron level (22), TBIC (a staggering 527), and transferrin % (4). Like you said, I’ve been punishing myself, baffled, as to why I was getting slower despite my intense training cocktail of runs, Bootcamp, and yoga. THIS video provided the answer. On Hemo-Plex (85mg elemental iron) and woman-specific multivitamins now. Idk how on earth I got to 40 without ever having supplements. Now I know better - appreciate you!

Hi 👋🏽 I did watch your videos since last year , I’m 52 never ran in my life started last July first 5 k 28 minutes, second one 25:09 ,one race after 4 weeks I did knock down over 2 minutes, I did it in 22:39 , now less than one year I’m sub 20 minutes. It is possible to do more than few minutes in 4 weeks . I did one 10 k tempo run , fartleke one night about 32 minutes, hill work one night and long run easy run Sunday also had 3 days off in between to recover. I did one evening strength and conditioning too at home . Thank you 🙏🏽 for your good advice in here I’m going to be international in my age group by next 2 years .

I just got into running in March at 38 and had general fitness from lifting weights and eating healthy but never did any cardio training. 1st week time trial - 24:29 2 months of easy base building w/strides - 22:16 Now I've been on Coach's half marathon plan for a month and doing a 5k race this week with no taper and hoping to break 21:30. If I hit that it would be 3 min improvement in 3 months. I want to be able to go sub 20 by October as kind of a side goal before my half. The 2 months of base building was crucial especially since I hadn't done any type of running in over 10 years.

Btw in 2018 was my last time running all my personal best time before I got burned out and running slower time than I quit running in 2022 . Is it possible for me to run sub 5 in the mile if I have these pb before ? Long story short I was an obesity kid started to join high school cross country and track in 2012 I was like 15 years old I couldn’t even jog 10 mins without dying and hard time breathing. I make my effort as a cross country runner than try track wasn’t good at it . And 12 years later I miss high school track I wish I started in elementary or middle school . Now I’m 27 years old I quit running when I was 25 years old since that was my last time I ran track and I ran a 4:53 1500m as my last race than I quit . Now that I miss my opportunity to attack the 5 mins mile hopefully I can achieve this time in my 30s . But here’s my 2018 results 400m 65 secs 600m indoor 1:42 800m 2:19 1000m indoor 3:05 1500m 4:45 1500m indoor 4:55 1 mile indoor 5:10 2000m time trial 6:43 3000m 10:23 2 mile 10:59 5km 17:55 8km 29:30 10km 37:28

I started running at 40. I'm 43 now and have a great shot at a BQ this fall. I am shocked at how fast I have progressed being in my 40s. I think I have several years of PRs if I stay healthy. I make strength training a big priority. Great video! Thank you

You speak my mind. I am coming back to running from Ironman to see If I can go below 1:20 for halfmarathon in Berlin next year, as I did when I was 43. I will be 48 (and thanks for that video of how to get under 1:20 - I will use some training sessions from it, I am too used to training I have always done and want to change it a little bit). Iron might be the most underestimated supplement there is. People usually know enough to care about magnesium but not much about widespread anemia in endurance sports. I will use a six months build up. I did not know there was liquid iron. I will use that instead of pills. Thanks a lot. Coming from triathlon I will keep high resistance training for muscles around knees and achilles tendons, they really help to keep chronic inflamation and injuries away (but one needs longer time to slowly get into it), and I will outsource some of the high intensity VO2max training to high intensity swimming and cycling. The shock recieved in running make it harder for my older body to max out heart rate and oxygen consumption without injuries. Crosstraining is more important in older age. Water and bike are gentle and one can regenerate much faster after hitting these physiological systems.

People just need to accept that trying to bite off more than you can chew in one block is a bad idea. Block stacking, done smartly, can produce huge results. It just takes time. Enjoy the process and don't chase the fitness.

Nice video Nathan. Another good tip is checking B12 levels. Levels under 450 is not ideal. Haematocrit / Iron levels over 45 for men would also be ideal. Think I was around 800b12 last time & 46 Haematocrit last time I checked it. Cheers 😊 .

Hey coach, i was wondering if you can be in base training for too long? The reason i ask is because i am now coming off my track season, and will probably take complete rest from running until august, then just do general fitness until the end of september, but then was wondering what i should do training wise from about October-February, until next track season. My high school doesn’t have cross country, and i also am mainly interested in the 400m-800m in track, and i don’t really want to do any other sports than track, so i was wondering if it would be beneficial to do base type training from Oct-Feb. During this time i would start off with only easy runs and then eventually start adding in strides, and not intense workouts such as tempos, but overall i would not do any super intense workouts, and it would basically just be general fitness. Would this be too long in offseason/base phase training, or would it be fine because the intensity would not be high through out this time? Any other suggestions of what i should do in this off season time? Thanks!

I think you would be fine doing this Tyler. That huge base training phase will make you dangerous when it comes time for you to start doing race pace specific workouts. Foundation work is always vital for high level athletic performance. 5-6x50m strides done 3 times per week through base training is sufficient before starting faster workouts and higher volume. Keep up the superior work brother.
